Initial Music Magazine Ideas

The working title I have chosen for my music magazine is "The Mixer' because my magazine aims to be a mix of music and fashion. It also plans to feature a wider spectrum of music genre's than magazines
such as Kerrang!.

The demographics I chose to look at first were age and gender. I decided my magazine would be predominantly aimed at females, but also males, aged 14 - 21. I chose females because there is a niche in the market for magazines for females with a more alternative taste in music. I chose an age range of 14 - 21 because I believe this to be the main age range of people having a strong attachment to music and going to gigs and concerts. People of this age range are also more likely to purchase magazines as they tend to have a fair bit of spare time on their hands. The language used within my magazine plans to be of a fairly intellectual level and will be easy to read, without being dumbed down. My magazine intends to be located in England, but featuring gigs and concerts from around the UK.
Using the website 'UK Tribes' I have chosen a few psychographics that suit my target audience. The psychographics I have chosen are as follows:
'Young Alts' http://uktribes.com/?p=article&id=30&article=248
'Scene Kids' http://uktribes.com/?p=article&id=10&article=188
'Emos' http://uktribes.com/?p=article&id=9&article=187

Th 'tribes' I have chosen cover quite a large range of people and the music within these 'tribes' overlap slightly, therefore covering all the artists needed. This means my magazine should appeal to not just one group of people, but much more. This could therefore lead to people discovering new bands.

The price of my magazine would be £2.20 as it's cheaper than some magazines, but expensive enough to make a profit. The fact that other music magazines are more expensive means that my cheaper magazine will be in great demand. I have also decided that my magazine will be produced fortnightly. I think, if it came out weekly, it would get far too expensive for the average teenager.

The content of my magazine will be similar to Kerrang! in the terms that it will feature live gig reviews, album reviews, new artists etc. I will also include a set of four posters to persuade readers to buy. However, it will differ to Kerrang! in that it will have various fashion pages and a list of new and upcoming bands every issue. My magazine won't cover the same sort of music as Kerrang! as it will have a much wider variety of genre's including more relatively unknown and mainstream bands.

The style of my magazine will be similar to Kerrang! but will be a little more feminine and pretty to look at. This is to catch the eye of my target audience. The colour scheme won't be all dark as this may be a bit boring for the reader. I plan to feature both mainstream and unknown bands in order to get the word out about new and upcoming bands and I hope this will encourage the reader to buy my magazine. What makes my magazine unique is that its aimed predominantly at females, which most music magazines aren't.
